August 2nd Nancy Knowles reads/sings from her dramatic memoir The Girl in the Moon

Knowles’ exceptionally beautiful soprano carried the evening in song and declaimed poetry…” —The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Continuing its SummerSundays concert series, Gyre Music presents Nancy Knowles (mezzosoprano, poet, visual artist) in a reading of her dramatic memoir The Girl in the Moon this Sunday, August 2 at 2:00pm in the Congregational Church in the scenic village of Hillsborough Center NH. Admission is free: donations are appreciated for the upkeep of this historic, acoustically delightful church. Knowles will be accompanied by composer/guitarist Frank Wallace on ten-string guitar, in the beautiful group of songs called Syzygy that he wrote for Knowles’ one-woman show. Programs, photos and stories about the performers and venue can be found online at http://summersundays.tumblr.com. More information about Knowles: www.nancyknowles.com, www.duoliveoak.com. The Girl in the Moon is an intimate glimpse into the inner lives of two artists, Knowles, and her mother Phoebe, who has painted her way through multiple tragedies with spirit and humor well into her nineties. Knowles has been writing this transformative work about the healing power of art over the last five years, drawing from their whimsical and intimate letters, journals, and conversations on space and grace, loss, longing, love and aging. The backbone of the piece, the second in a trilogy of dramatic memoirs, is Knowles’ own poetry. Sunday’s performance will be a reading (and singing) of this work, which in its staged version will include also movement and live painting. Frank Wallace wrote the 16 songs for the play in 2006. He is has written over 85 songs with classical guitar accompaniment, most of them, like these, in groups, or cycles. His accompaniments on 10-string guitar are colorful, complex, and virtuosic.
